GET OUT OF YOUR HEAD AND INTO YOUR BODY

Realize your connection to the natural world around you. Inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin Yoku, Forest Immersion (also known as Forest Bathing or Forest Therapy) has been scientifically proven to boost immune strength, reduce stress, and improve cognitive functioning. By slowing down and carefully observing with all our senses, we escape the rapid pace of our daily routines, and relax into the tranquility of nature.

On your Forest Immersion Experience, a certified guide will offer a series of guided “invitations” to assist you in finding your own authentic way of experiencing the natural areas around DC and its suburbs. At the end of the walk, we’ll transition back to the “real world” with a tea ceremony where you will enjoy tea made from plants foraged on site, and some healthy snacks. There’s no right or wrong way to do it, and it’s great for people of all ages and abilities. All are welcome in the forest.

It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men’s hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air, that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit

Robert Louis Stevenson

From my perspective, I absolutely believe in a greater spiritual power, far greater than I am, from which I have derived strength in moments of sadness or fear. That’s what I believe, and it was very, very strong in the forest.

Jane Goodall

Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home. Wilderness is a necessity.

John Muir

Our ability to perceive quality in nature begins, as in art, with the pretty. It expands through successive stages of the beautiful to values as yet uncaptured by language.

Aldo Leopold

A tree has roots in the soil yet reaches to the sky. It tells us that in order to aspire we need to be grounded and that no matter how high we go it is from our roots that we draw sustenance.

Wangari Maathai

There are a thousand ways to kneel and kiss the ground; there are a thousand ways to go home again.

Rumi

Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.

Rachel Carson

Look deep into nature and you will understand everything better.

Albert Einstein

ABOUT FOREST IMMERSION DC

Shinrin Yoku/Forest Bathing/Forest Therapy was developed in Japan during the 1980s, when the tech boom saw Japanese workers flocking to indoor workspaces, sitting in front of computers under fluorescent lights (sound familiar?). At the same time, the Japanese health community noticed a spike in chronic issues such as stress, hypertension, depression and anxiety. Today, Shinrin Yoku is a key component of preventive health care and healing in Japan. You can experience the healing benefits of nature right here in DC in local settings, with similar benefits.

Forest Immersion DC is Toby’s local take on Shinrin Yoku. DC has repeatedly been named the most fit city in America, but many of us are stressed out! Forest bathing is an accessible but effective way to experience the healing benefits of nature. By simply spending time among trees, you can right your relationship to nature, your community, and maybe even to yourself.  Wherever you were born, we all have our human roots in the forest. We are a part of nature!
